History of the Mass Ordinary

The histories behind the different texts of the Mass Ordinary are quite complex. The histories of these texts are broken down to be easily understandable.

The History of the Sanctus
The Sanctus text is the oldest of the Mass, even though it wasn't added until somewhere between the 1st and 5th centuries.

The History of the Agnus Dei
The Agnus Dei, like the Credo, was one of the last things to be added to the Mass Ordinary.

The History of the Credo
The Credo or "creed" is the affirmation of Christian belief. The Credo boasts the longest text. It was last to be added to the Mass.

The History of Gloria
The Gloria dates back to the 2nd century. Its text was composed by a single person rather than being taken from the Biblical Psalter.

History of Kyrie
The exact creation of the Kyrie is unknown to this day, but researchers have found evidence supporting its inclusion in the Mass.
