About the Emerson String Quartet:
- Of the 20+ recordings The Emerson String Quartet has released, eight were awarded Grammy Awards (two of them for Best Classical Album). The Emerson String Quartet is the only quartet to receive the coveted Grammys for "Best Classical Album" and "Best Chamber Music Album" for one album. The same album also won the group Gramophone Magazine's "Record of the Year Award." The 1989 album was of Bartok's Quartets.
- The Emerson String Quartet is in residence at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
- The Emerson String Quartet took its name after Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Eugene Drucker, violin :
Apart from the Emerson String Quartet, Eugene Drucker is an active and accomplished soloist, and has performed with many leading orchestras including the orchestras of Montreal, Brussels, Hartford, Richmond, American Symphony Orchestra, and the Aspen Chamber Symphony. Drucker graduated from Columbia University and the Julliard School.
Philip Setzer, violin :
Born to two professional violinists in Cleveland, Ohio, Philip Setzer began learning violin from his parents at the early age of five. Setzer also graduated from the Julliard School. Apart from performing, Setzer is a regular faculty member at the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshops at Carnegie Hall and the Jerusalem Music Center. He also teaches at SUNY Stony Brook.
Lawrence Dutton, viola :
Violist, Lawrence Dutton earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Julliard School. As a soloist, Dutton has performed with many American and European orchestras including those of Germany, Belgium, New York, and New Jersey. Dutton has also performed as guest artist with several major music festivals in America.
David Finckel, cello :
David Finckel, along with pianist Wu Han, serves as Artistic Director of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Finckel joined the Emerson Quartet in 1979, and like all the other members, has an extensive and acclaimed solo career.
