Barber's First Essay for Orchestra, op. 12

By , About.com Guide

Barber's First Essay for Orchestra is wonderful piece I accidently stumbled upon while searching for a good recording of his Adagio for Strings. Completed in 1937, the young Barber had submitted his work along with the Adagio for Strings to Toscanini, the conductor of the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Toscanini was so impressed by the young American's works, he played them both on air (which was broadcast coast-to-coast on November 5, 1938). Barber's music was the first American works played by Toscanini on the NBC network. Toscanini remained with the NBC Symphony Orchestra for seventeen seasons, and he rarely played American works.

Barber's First Essay for Orchestra is a treasure hidden in the shadow of the Adagio for Strings. Its underlying theme conveys great sorrow and urgency. Opening with lush, stacked chords and a flowing melodies, the listener is drawn in. As the music progresses, it's almost like a great battle is unfolding before your eyes (or ears!). Trumpets sound as though the battle has been won, but there is still something not quite right. The feeling of sorrow is still there. More highs and lows, quick moving notes, and recurring themes bring the piece to a close.

Barber's First Essay for Orchestra is a fascinating piece, surly to please any listener. Post your thoughts and opinions on Barber's First Essay for Orchestra in the Classical Music Forum.
