Classical Music Work of the Week - November 28, 2005

Vivaldi's Four Seasons

By , About.com Guide

Inspired by the bizarre weather patterns of late, I chose Vivaldi's Four Seasons for this week's classical work. It truly captures the essence of each season...all of which I have experienced in the last week. I don't remember the first time I heard it, ages ago, I'm sure, but I do remember playing the 'Winter' movement in my middle school orchestra class. Even then, I could play it from memory. Vivaldi's melodies easily stick to anyone who has ever heard them. Published in 1725, in a set of 12 concertos, Antonio Vivaldi composed sonnets for each movement. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is, perhaps, the boldest program music of the baroque period.
