In 1781, while in Munich hoping to gain employment, Mozart invested great care in composing his opera, Idomeneo. Mozart, in true genius form, paid great attention to detail dramatically and musically in both the opera's development and progress as well as the characters' backgrounds and motivations. His opera was a huge success. Mozart's family traveled to Munich to celebrate with him, which explains why there aren't the usual written letters by Mozart describing the first performance. On top of the success and celebration, Mozart had just turned twenty-five two days before this opera premiered. (Yeah, I said twenty-five. If you think that is young, he was only eight years old when he composed his first symphony!)
