Clint Mansell and PWEI:
Clint Mansell began his musical career as the lead singer and guitar player for the British band Pop Will Eat Itself (PWEI) in 1981, though the band was called "From Eden" at the time. It wasn't until 1986 that they changed the name to PWEI. PWEI had a handful of successful records, though their songs didn't reach the tops of music charts. In 1996, the group disbanded and members began starting their own projects.
Clint Mansell, the Film Composer:
After PWEI disbanded, Mansell's friend Darren Aronofsky (a director) contacted him to produce a film score for his latest movie Pi. Pi earned critical acclaim for Aronofsky's directing talents and earned him the Directing Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and the Gotham Open Palm Award. Despite the movie's success, Mansell's score did not receive the same attention. It wasn't until his score for Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000) that Mansell earned his much deserved acclaim. The movie even earned Mansell a cult following.
More About Clint Mansell:
Mansell's original score for Requiem for a Dream has been widely used throughout the media, in particular his song "Lux Aeterna" (watch a video of it here on YouTube). Following the success of Requiem for a Dream, Mansell went on to compose scores for a handful of movies, including 11:14, Abandon, Doom, and Sahara. In 2006, his score for Aronofsky's The Fountain earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Film Score in 2007. Mansell's latest work was composed for the movie Definitely, Maybe in 2008.
