Guide Review - Saxophone Music of M. Zachary Johnson
The music is far from avant-garde as it is with some modern composers. Instead, I am reminded of the "small parlor" classical music of the Romantic Period - very intimate, very deep. Johnson's melodic passages are flowing, lyrical, and almost ad lib (even though they were methodically created). A particular favorite of mine is the Adagio from the world premier of Grand Sonata for Alto Saxophone & Piano, which highlights these characteristics. The balance between the saxophone and piano is close to perfect. Each one really brings out the best of the other. The piano accompaniment alone is full of color and vibrant rhythms. Pianist, Elizabeth Wolynec, deserves much applause - as well as the entire cast of performers. The album is fantastic!
