The Kalichstein/Laredo/Robinson Trio - Beethoven - The Complete Cycle of Trios

Koch International Classics

The Bottom Line

A flawless performance of Beethoven's piano trios. The Kalichstein/Laredo/Robinson Trio may not have a catchy name like the Emerson String Quartet, but their musicianship is right on par. Like other leading chamber ensembles, each performer has an extensive background and notable reputation in solo work.

Pros

  • Highly skilled and acclaimed performers
  • Energetic, artistic, and superb performance
  • Beethoven's piano trios are a must for any collection

Cons

  • none

Guide Review - Beethoven - The Complete Cycle of Trios Volume Two

The Kalichstein/Laredo/Robinson Trio debuted at the White House for the Inauguration of President Carter in 1977, and to this very day, is made up of its three original members - pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jamie Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson. The trio has since then set the standard for piano trio performance. The internationally known trio has played to sold out crowds across the US and the globe in many world-class venues. During the 2006-07 season, the trio performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center as part of their 30th Anniversary. When they are not performing, Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson serve on the faculty at the Indiana University School of Music, while Joseph Kalichstein continues teaching at The Juilliard School. On this two-disk album, you'll find (not in album order):
  • Piano Trio in E flat Opus 1, No. 1
  • Piano Trio No. 2 in G Opus 1, No. 2
  • Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor Opus 1, No. 3
  • Trio in B flat Opus 2
  • Trio in B flat; in one movement for violin, cello, and piano, WoO39.
Kalichstein says that Beethoven's trios "take us through most of Beethoven's life," despite their small number. If you've never heard Beethoven's piano trios, then you're in for a real treat. The Kalichstein/Laredo/Robinson Trio performs each trio with delicate vibrancy and extreme accuracy without loosing the spirit of the music. If you're looking for a complete trio collection, I highly recommend this fantastic album.
