It seems Christmas comes earlier and earlier every passing year. Most of the retail stores in my city, including our grocery stores, already have their Christmas displays and products on showcase. What has this got to do with Giselle you might ask? Well, the ballet's composer, Adolphe Adam, not only wrote a handful of ballets and dozens of operas, he also wrote the quintessential Christmas song, "O Holy Night."
Giselle is a beautifully romantic ballet set in the picturesque vineyard laden hills near the Rhine River. It's actually one of the most physically demanding roles for a leading ballet dancer - the part calls for such precise and perfected movements. I've written a synopsis of Giselle for you to read. And before it's taken down, here's an exquisite performance of the ballet at Teatro alla Scala for you to watch on YouTube.
