Here's another fantastic opera by Richard Strauss. Ariadne auf Naxos is an opera in two parts: a prologue and an opera. That may sound a bit confusing, but after reading the Ariadne auf Naxos synopsis, you'll find that it makes perfect sense. The opera takes place in the home of a very wealthy Viennese patron who has scheduled several performances and a fireworks display after the evening's dinner. When dinner runs long, the major-domo orders that both performances, a serious opera and an Italian comedy, must be performed at the same time in order for the fireworks show to begin on time. This comedic opera with serious (and seriously beautiful) music has been a great success since its premier in 1912.
