Aaron,
I’m concerned that you have labeled “Tosca” as an example of opera seria! As a teacher of music history I have just graded tests on which I have counted that as an incorrect response. Opera seria’s roots (as I understand the term) are in the Baroque period with a few making their way into the Classical and Romantic Periods. In general they deal with Greek or Roman gods or historic situations, not the contemporary life of the composer. They are primarily 3 or 4 acts. They are primarily recitativo secco, recitativo accompagnato, and arias–there are no ensembles, at least until a few are written in imitation of opera buffa. Puccini’s “Tosca” is in no way opera seria! It is serious, yes, but it does not follow the traditions of opera seria.
