During the presidential inauguration, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman, pianist Gabriella Montero and clarinetist Anthony McGill, performed "Air and Simple Gifts", written for the inauguration by John Williams. My suspicions were confirmed by the Associated Press today (read the full story) - the famous inauguration quartet performed to taped music. While watching Tuesday's live performance, I thought to myself that they couldn't possibly sound that good in such cold weather. The piano I have sits next to a window - during the winter time, it loses its tune so fast it's not even funny. I imagine their instruments were not much different. I'm not the least bit upset that it was performed to taped music - it actually could have been atrocious had it been live. Here's a YouTube video of the performance if you have not already seen it. The musicians are actually performing along with the tape, so those near them could actually here them play. Those farther away (and those watching on television), however, only heard the taped recording.
