The winner of the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Classical Album is going to be tough to decide as the albums nominated all boast substantial musical achievements. Cecilia Bartoli's Maria features eight world premier recordings of early romantic period works, while Tarik O'Regan's Threshold of Night's title work earned him the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters Award in the Liturgical category. Hilary Hahn's recording of the rarely performed Schoenberg Violin Concerto is rightly nominated given the piece's extreme difficulty. applaud Bartoli Grammy nomination.. not as excited about Hillary Hahn’s artistry.
Would like to see pianists, Ashkenazy and Perahia at the top of list
(Perahia has been recognized in the past for his Handel Scarlatti Album, and Chopin Etudes)
Notice NY Times recommended list of classical CDs is somewhat puzzling.
You echo my sentiments exactly Shirley. The NY Time recommended list of CD’s was really very puzzling. I think the writer just chose random CD’s and wrote about them, further proof of classical music’s broad audience being underrepresented. I think Lisa Batiashvili’s 6 miniatures and the Beethoven concerto should have, without a doubt, been nominated. All technical difficulties aside, which Hillary Hahn, stakes herself, Batiashvili’s album is absolutely beautiful and will be one of my favorites for years to come.
