Met Opera - Live in HD - Saturday Performance
Friday December 19, 2008
This Saturday, Dec. 20th, the Met is broadcasting its new production of Massenet's Thaïs with Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson, and Michael Schade. Thaïs, in short, is the story of a monk who becomes captivated by a beautiful girl named Thaïs. He sets out to convert Thaïs to Christianity, but later realizes his noble quest is actually rooted in lust and not God. My good friend has already seen this production in the city and speaks very highly of it. I plan to take my mother to the HD broadcast as an early Christmas present. What a beautiful production from the golden sets to Renee Fleming’s designer costumes by Christian La Croix. Sliding into the latter stage of her career, it’s nice to see that Ms. Fleming is still in good voice and tenacious enough to tackle such vocally challenging roles as Thais. I applaud Peter Gelb and his mission to expand the audience of the Metropolitan Opera. Hopefully this performance will be preserved on DVD as many of the other HD broadcasts from the past. There are far too many recordings, video and audio, of this relatively unknown gem.
Big round of applause for Renee Fleming and all her performances. An ex-New Yorker relocated to Fresno, I was delighted to attend Fleming’s benefit for the Grand Opera here in the San Joaquin Valley. Consummate artistry, phrasing, and communication with listeners.
Good post, admin.
