I think it’s interesting that the selection committee has included video recordings in the opera category. As far as I know, past nominees have always been strictly for audio recordings, but the Metropolitan Opera’s DVDs of Tan Dun’s “The First Emperor” and Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” have been nominated - they of course being in MET’s HD Broadcast series. I suppose they are in fact recordings. Although I’m sure Tan Dun’s work is innovative well executed (some friends of mine with excellent taste claimed it’s their favorite opera after attending the HD Broadcast a few years ago), I’m rooting for Onegin - the combination of Fleming as the triumphant Tatiana and Hvorastovsky as the cold Onegin is a difficult combination to bring down.
