Thursday May 1, 2008
Rostropovich, once the musical director and conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, was considered one of the 20th century's greatest cellists. This time last year (April 27, 2007), Rostropovich died at 80 years old. Rostropovich suffered from intestinal cancer at the time of his death. Rostropovich's performances and mastery over the instrument inspired, awed, and delighted audiences throughout the world.
